They Came from The Supermarket

An invasion can come from anywhere. These alert filmmakers predicted the next great invasion, and bring us a cautionary tale from the future. Their entry in the 2009 48 Hour Film Project won an Audience Choice Award for their screening group.

You’ll never stand easy at the supermarket checkout after you’ve seen this film.

Tomorrow the 2010 season kicks off for San Jose 48 Hour Film makers. The creators of this film will compete with about 40 other teams to create the best film in San Jose.  Screenings begin next week, so check our city website for details, and save the dates.

Don’t know how we missed this one. It took a friend pointing this YouTube phenom out for us before we discovered (35 million YouTube views late) the delight of knowing Kelly.

Experts and Consultants

The teams in San Francisco’s 2010 48 Hour Film Project drew “Geoffery Cook, a consultant” as their required character. Veteran team It Donned On Me took the challenge, along with their randomly drawn genre “Heist Movie” and went to it with gusto. This is what they produced.

We have to admit being smitten with the criminal team they found for this job.

Beautiful Moments, No Losers

Our friends in the indie acoustic rock band The Beautiful Losers granted permission to use a couple of their tracks to score a highlights reel from the San Francisco 48HFP.  This particular reel (about 4 mins in length) is cut to a track from their recently released CD, Four Corners of a Tiny Planet.

We think it went very nicely with these clips.  Take a look and see what you think.

Til the Money Comes

One of our favorite things is to sit and speculate about what to do with that windfall fortune that is certain to be headed our way. We mean, c’mon, you KNOW you’re going to hit it big. Sometime. Soon.  So what better way to pass the evening than to try on ideas for that new found wealth.

Funny story here. The team that made this went on to compete in DC for 2009 and we’re still waiting to hear what else they’re up to. We do know that like many of our colleagues, they’ve fallen into affinity with the Canon 5D.

Perspective

We’ve always enjoyed programming that puts things into perspective for us. In the history of such works (dramatic and narrative), we’ve enjoyed many delightful works. Stories like those in Life is Beautiful, Contact, and and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy come immediately to mind. Long running works such as Connections, and Cosmos spring forth in such a conversation.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it – or in your blunderbuss muzzle and shoot it! Perhaps we are more than a tiny film of self-important noise in a gargantuan symphony of amazing grandeur. But if so, then we would be wise to consider our true place in such a creation.

Who Gets the Girl

We always knew there were some rules about who gets the girl, but we’ve never seen it as clearly explained as it is here in this Adventure Serial movie from Thinking Stone Pictures.

Hold onto your seats, keep your head low, and get ready to enjoy an amazing ride with Mister and Dister Action.

We loved the score and the comic timing in this film.  The audience loved it too from what we heard in the theater.

Nightly Heist

This film from Barkada Inc. and Square Marden was their entry in the 2010 San Francisco 48 Hour Film Project.

It won Audience Choice for its screening group and was also acknowledged for its fresh approach to the selected genre (Heist Movie).  Take a look and see if you enjoy Thief In The Night as much as SF audiences did.
