Could It Really Work?

When we saw “Back to the Future” we knew it was a fable, a fairy tale, a fantasy — in short A Lie!

But when we saw this short film from a promising young local filmmaker, we had to step back and think about it again.

Uly Mostrales is one of the creative forces behind Barkada Inc and this student film excerpt was very ably executed. Enjoy!

Uly and Barkada Inc. are regular contributors to Bay Area 48 Hour Film Project competitions (they’ve competed in both San Jose and San Francisco) and we look forward to seeing more from them in the future.

Shootout Entry – One End of the World

Teams that won their city in the 48HFP or teams that have been award winners in multiple cities are invited to participate in the International Shootout during the fall. Teams get their instructions on Friday night by email and have until midnight on Monday to submit their film by mail.  This year (2010) the teams were not given elements (prop, line, and character) but were instead given a scenario (End of the World) and turned loose.

Jacob Rangel says that the extra day to make the movie is actually a poison gift because it makes 48 Hour film faithful believe they have a lot of extra time. This just pays out enough rope to create quite a tangle. But Team Stroganoff finished on time and turned in this great story.

What Just Happened?

One of the conditions that competitors in the 48 Hour Film Project must meet is the use of a line of dialog supplied to them on Friday night.  All of the teams must use the same line (also the same prop and character) in their films. This creates some interesting conditions during the screening and highlights night.

The team that made this next film found a wonderful way to use their line, ‘What just happened?”

They also took home a pair of “Best Acting” awards for two of their cast members.

More with Chad

In addition to the excellent series (Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager) there is also a series of ancillary spots that feature Chad in other parts of his life. This clip was recently released.  It illustrates some of Chad’s “empire-class” pickup strategies.  Will it work? Will Chad go out with Felicia Day. If you dig around, you can also find Chad in public service announcements, training films and more.
